Owner
Mama Soul loved to cook and always made the most pretty and tastiest cakes. Migrating To California from Alabama, Mama Soul used her passion for cooking to help earn extra income. One day while noticing how Black Students were being treated during lunch at the local restaurants on Tennessee Street, at the death of Martin Luther King, she decided to open her own restaurant. A Dream! Mama Soul's desire was to have a place where Blacks could sit down and be proud of their own culture's food, get a good meal and be treated with Dignity and Respect. At the time she was a Domestic Worker in San Francisco and Marin County, Mama Soul has always participated in Civil Rights Programs and activities as she had indeed sat in the back of the bus. The House of Soul was the name, opening it's doors in 1968 and continues to operate. During those early years Mama supported the community in Vallejo, always donating her time & helping others.

I love House of Soul. The fried chicken is to die for and the rice and gravy is delicious. The atmosphere is nice and the restaurant is very clean. I will be a faithful customer.

This restaurant was recommended by the hotel and we're thankful for that recommendation. Great service (really friendly, and hardly noticeable, almost like fine-dining). Serious good fresh fish and a good wine selection. We decided to come back to the same restaurant the next day (after checking out the others in the area that aren't at the same level).

Wow, this was some of the best fried chicken I've ever had in my life. Get it with the gravy on the side so you can appreciate the perfectly crisp, not too bready drumsticks and wings. The fish on Friday is excellent as well. Highly recommended.
